A glimpse of Hog Island’s rugged beauty and quiet charm

A Working Island, A Quiet History
Three threads run through the story of Hog Island. The earliest reaches back into Irish myth, the second into the gentry estates of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the third into living memory.
Diarmuid and Gráinne
Local tradition places Hog Island on the long westward path of Diarmuid and Gráinne, the lovers of the Fianna cycle who fled across Ireland pursued by Fionn mac Cumhaill and his warriors. Stones along the island's shore are said in older tellings to have been hurled from the mainland by the giants of Fionn's band as the pair sheltered here. Such stories cling to many of the islands and headlands of the Atlantic coast — quiet acknowledgements that these places were known, named, and storied long before they were mapped.
The Vandeleur Estate
In more recent centuries the island formed part of the wider Vandeleur estate. The Vandeleurs were an Anglo-Irish family of Dutch descent who settled in west Clare in the late seventeenth century and rose to hold nearly twenty thousand acres across the barony of Moyarta. From their seat at Kilrush House they shaped the development of the town and surrounding coast for more than two hundred years. The island passed out of the estate in the early twentieth century when the Vandeleur lands were broken up.
The Last Family
Within living memory a single family farmed Hog Island, living in the stone cottage that still stands above the shore. They drew their water from the island's freshwater well and crossed to the mainland by boat for provisions, mass, and market. The cottage is now derelict and shared only with the goats who roam the grassland — a quiet end to a long line of human habitation, and an evocative starting point for whoever comes next.
